Voice Disorders

What are Voice Disorders?
Voice disorders may cause the voice to sound hoarse or breathy, change the pitch of the voice, cause an apparent loss of the voice, or cause pain while talking.

What are some types of Voice Disorders and their causes?
          •
Vocal Nodules: Nodules on the vocal folds that make the voice sound breathy and may lower the pitch of the voice.
Caused by excessive use of the voice (speaking, singing, yelling, etc.).

•   Vocal Cord Dysfunction: Vocal folds close while a person is inhaling or exhaling. Often triggered by strenuous exercise.

•   Contact Ulcers: Ulcers that are often accompanied by pain and hoarseness. Caused by excessive coughing or throat               clearing, reflux, or intubation.

•   Spasmodic Dysphonia: Speech is effortful and sounds strangled and harsh. Caused by very tight vocal cord closure.
