PROMPT Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets

What is PROMPT?
PROMPT (Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets) is a tactile-kinesthetic approach that uses touch cues to a patient's articulators (jaw, tongue, lips) to manually guide them through a targeted word, phrase or sentence. The technique develops motor control and the development of proper oral muscular movements.

How does PROMPT work?
Every word is made up of individual sounds or phonemes. Each sound requires different muscle contractions, retractions placement and movement of the jaw, lips, tongue, neck and chest to produce the sound. The therapist at Achieve Hearing & Rehabilitation will work with your child to “teach” their muscles to produce a phoneme correctly by stimulating the muscles through touch.

How is PROMPT different from traditional articulation therapy?
Traditional articulation therapy relies on a person’s ability to make sounds based on what he/she hears or sees. PROMPT focuses on teaching the movements for sounds with touch cues.

Does my child need PROMPT?
An evaluation will determine if your child will benefit from PROMPT. The most common patients who benefit from PROMPT have motor speech disorders, articulation problems or are non-verbal.
